View MoreThere are three World Heritage sites among the nominated components of Beijing Central Axis, namely the Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang [the Forbidden City of Beijing, 1987, the Temple of Heaven: an Imperial Sacrificial Altar in Beijing, 1998], and the Grand Canal [the Old City of Beijing Section of Tonghui River: the Chengqing Upper Watergate (the Wanning Bridge), 2014], International documents such as the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972) and the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention (revised in 2021) as well as the Chinese laws and departmental regulations mentioned above are all applicable to World Cultural Heritage conservation.

The current planning system of the urban environment of Beijing Central Axis consists of plans of various levels including the Beijing Master Plan (2016-2035), the Regulatory Plan for the Core Area of the Capital (2018-2035), the Conservation Plan for the Historical and Cultural City of Beijing (2002), and the Conservation and Management Plan for Beijing Central Axis (2022-2035).
View MoreMulti-level urban plans from the municipal level to the block level have been published and implemented. The conservation and management system for Beijing Central Axis has been developed at both property and component levels. At the property level, the Beijing Municipal Leading Group for Building the National Cultural Center, led by municipal leaders, coordinates central, municipal, and district governments and various authorities of cultural heritage, urban planning, culture and tourism, parks and forestry, transport, and water, to deliberate and decide on major matters concerning the conservation of the nominated property. Beijing Central Axis Conservation Center is responsible for implementing decisions made by the Leading Group and carrying out regular management such as heritage monitoring and archival management. The heritage impact assessment and risk management mechanisms have been embedded in the management system.
